The Epic Site Where the Ramayana Begins
Before Lord Rama took divine avatar in Ayodhya, King Dasharatha, grief-stricken by the lack of an heir to the Sun Dynasty, consulted Royal Preceptor Guru Vashishta. On his advice, King Dasharatha invited Sage Rishyashringa to perform the supreme Putrakameshthi Yajna. That momentous Vedic sacrifice took place at Makhaura Dham, located approximately 22 km east of Ayodhya on the serene banks of the sacred Manorama River.
The Sacred Yajna Kunda & Sthalas
At Makhaura Dham, Agni Dev (the Fire God) manifested directly from the sacrificial fire bearing a golden bowl of divine sweet pudding (kheer/payasam). King Dasharatha distributed this divine kheer among Queens Kaushalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra, leading to the birth of the four divine princes. Key sights include:
- The Ancient Yajna Kunda: Preserved grounds where the sacrificial altar stood.
- Manorama River Ghats: Peaceful natural ghats where devotees take a holy dip believed to fulfill desires for righteous lineage and family harmony.
- Makheshwar Nath Temple: An ancient Shiva shrine worshipped by King Dasharatha prior to inaugurating the yajna.
