The Epitome of Selfless Fraternal Love
When Lord Rama departed for his 14-year exile, Prince Bharat refused to occupy the throne of Ayodhya. Instead, he carried Lord Ramaβs wooden sandals (Charan Paduka) with deep reverence, placed them upon the royal throne at Nandigram, and governed the kingdom as a humble servant while living in an ascetic grass hut, wearing tree bark and surviving on wild roots. That sacred hermitage is preserved today at Bharat Kund, located 18 km south of Ayodhya.
Sacred Shrines at Bharat Kund
- Bharat Hanuman Milap Mandir: Marking the exact spot where Hanuman met Bharat to deliver the joyful news of Lord Rama's triumphant return from Lanka.
- The Holy Bharat Kund Tank: A vast, peaceful reservoir where pilgrims take holy dips and perform ancestral rites (Pind Daan and Shraddha).
- Gufa Mandir (Underground Cave Shrine): Preserving the subterranean meditation chamber where Bharat engaged in deep tapasya for 14 years.
